I’m surprised that there are literally zero photos taken from the journey to the furthest island I’ve ever been to, a island off the coast of Dampier Peninsula \u2014 Sunday Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was at the edge of far north Western Australia, in the Kimberley region. This is where I first got the opportunity to experience living in an Aboriginal community, where tradition and the relationship with the land and ocean are still vivid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My partner and I arrived in this rural coastal community at the end of 2023 and started working at the local community store. Living in a community like this had always been one of our dreams, so even as Asians in an unfamiliar Black community, we stayed open, friendly, and tried to make the most of every opportunity to connect and learn with the locals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It took us a couple of months before we could even meet their eyes or talk to them. From simple hellos to small conversations, cooking gourmet Asian meals they had never tasted before, we worked smoothly as a team. As time went on, we slowly became friends, even like family that shares homemade bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the small car we had, the furthest point we could reach was driving from where we lived to the community center, then walk 1 km through the sand dunes to reach the shoreline. We often went there to watch the sunset and wonder how much further we could go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the question \u201cCan you take us out on our day off?\u201d was finally answered by a warm-hearted elder of the community, we were bouncing around like kids, as if God had just unlock a new door for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the day of the journey, we woke up at 6 a.m. to prepare small handmade onigiri for lunch. We threw all the essentials into a cooler, put on our swimsuits and reef shoes, and stood outside in the 40-degree heat, waiting by the driveway to be picked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that moment, we still had no idea where we were heading \u2014 until our guide arrived in his big ute, towing a small boat. That was when we realized: we were about to set sail into the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we quickly jumped into the car, our hearts and souls felt wide open. Loud music was playing, our excitement rising as we talked passionately about Aboriginal culture while driving through the community roads toward another edge of the shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From there, he carefully lowered half of the boat into the water while we held tightly onto the side, floating between land and sea. Our guide quickly parked the car, jumped into the boat with us, started the engine, and we set off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The landscape had been shaped by millions of years of evolution, where two tectonic plates collided and formed a complex structure that draws water in and out. It created one of the most famous natural wonders, the Horizontal Falls, where powerful tidal currents rush between narrow gaps in massive boulders. But that is only a small part of the Kimberley coast. The entire region moves in mysterious ways that cannot be understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once we were out on the ocean, the bizarre scene I had only witnessed from afar unfolded right in front of my eyes. The water no longer flowed in a single direction. One stretch pushed east while another collided against it, creating waves in the middle of the sea, while elsewhere the current spiraled inward like a living force. It felt as if the ocean was trapped inside its own puzzle, never escaping, playing a vast symphony where every movement carried a different voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God, if I ever wondered about the limits of beauty, I think something quietly opened a new gate for both of us. The whole experience felt otherworldly, seasoned with salt, like the ocean itself. Those who reach the furthest edges are not left with clarity, but with wonder, like a void that can never be filled. As small as we are as human beings, no answer ever feels certain, not even the seconds we breathe in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was speechless. The sound of the engine, the waves, and the wind seemed to fall into silence as we cruised through King Sound and reached the shore of Sunday Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had our lunch by the coast while our guide explained the history of the island. It was once occupied by community members, but now the infrastructure had been destroyed by severe storms, with a small graveyard on the side representing the spirits that once lived there. We paid our respects, grateful to be able to visit such an isolated, distant place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After lunch, we dipped into the ocean. Even though we were not confident swimmers, our guide encouraged us to float. As we lay in the saltwater, the weight of our bodies was lifted by the ancient landscape, carrying us into a myth where time transcends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We continued our journey along another side of the island. Mangrove forests appeared like hidden passages guiding us forward. The water reflected a turquoise glow against the dark red boulders. Everything remained in its wildest form. As we reached open water, I caught my first fish there\u2014a huge trevally. We all shouted as the line tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before dark, we returned to the mainland, and our guide taught me how to kill and gut the fish. When he pulled out the fish\u2019s heart, he told me to eat it, since I was the one who had caught it. I didn\u2019t hesitate and swallowed it whole, something I never imagined I would do in my life. Only afterward did I realize it was partly a joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just like that, I became someone who had swallowed a raw fish heart. That was the final note of this journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our guide was a well-travelled and respected member of the community. He treated us like family and ensured our safety throughout the journey. Kind and generous, he introduced us to traditional ways of living, shared bush tucker with us, taught us how to blow sound from a seashell, and gave us the opportunity to glimpse the power of the Kimberley coast. Even now, I am still grateful for the experience he took us on; it almost felt like a ceremony, a ceremony to embrace what is the rawest form of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I still remember the saltiness of the wind rushing across my face as we cruised through King Sound. It felt as if parts of my identity were beginning to erode with it. There was a faint light glowing inside that emptiness. It reminded me of a dream I once had, where I stood on a cliff looking out over a bizarre ocean, wondering what lay on the other side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time I realized my growing attachment to that feeling of emptiness, it was already too late. I was being drawn in, like a spiral, moving further and deeper without knowing where it would lead. I thought about the many dreams I had of the ocean. The pull was undeniable. The sense of distance only stretched further as I walked through reality with those dreams, picking up fragments of memory like seashells washed ashore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where am I? Who am I? What is the meaning of all this? The questions remained in silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
